Architects' training: Discussion with Julien Landry
Offering a forum for discussion and a space for exchanging ideas, the Autre perspective podcast launched by Kollectif tackles issues fueling current debates in the architecture profession and the challenges facing professionals today.
Co-hosted by Marc-André Carignan, content manager at Kollectif, and Grégory Taillon, architect and Kollectif’s Instagram manager, each episode explores a specific theme with invited architects.
Are future architects well trained?
For the third episode of the series, architect Julien Landry, head of the mentoring and support program for architecture interns at Jodoin Lamarre Pratte architectes and intern representative on the Ordre des architectes du Québec (OAQ) board of directors from 2018 to 2020, was invited to speak with Anne Cormier, associate architect at Atelier Big City and former director of Université de Montréal’s School of Architecture, and Krystel Flamand, lead architect at Prism Architects, on the topic of training architects.
Are students adequately exposed to all fields of practice so that they can make informed choices about their futures? Are future architects presented with an accurate definition of design that goes beyond sketching? Does architectural training place sufficient emphasis on the importance of communication? Should internships be rethought and standardized? Should employers that supervise internships be more engaged? What importance should we attach to research?
